Chelpur near jammikunta



Chelpur in Huzurabad mandal is about 48 kms to the south-east of Karimnagar and 8 kms from Huzurabad lying on the B.T. road leading to Jammikunta. The village is a prehistoric site as there are a few megalithic burials (cairn circles) near a
stream flowing beside a hillock. There is a Chalukyan temple dedicated to Siva outside the village.
Siva Temple
This is a single shrine temple consisting of garbhagriha, antarala and an enclosed mukhamandapa. The adhisthana contains upana, patta and four petalled lotuses carved on the gala part below the vedi. The doorways contain projecting
cornices above the lintel. The temple faces the east. There arefour pillars within the garbhagriha which is an early Chalukyan feature followed in the temples of 10th and 11th centuries A.D.
The spire of the temple is in stepped pyramidal form with a Sukanasa projecting before it. The cornice all along the mandapais slant. A unique sculpture of Annapurna, the consort of Siva holding pot with one hand and a ladle in another hand as if ready to serve the food and another sculpture of Mahishasuramardini
driving Trisula into the body of asura are noticed near the temple. There is a Narasimha temple in the village with a spire in stepped pyramidal form.
